(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لا يَخْصَمُ مَنْ يَحْتَجُّ بِالحَقِّ۔

This can be translated as,

One who argues by truth is not defeated.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the power and strength of truth in any argument or debate.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word (yakhsamu) "يَخْصَمُ" means to argue or dispute, while (man) "مَنْ" refers to the one who. (yahtajju) "يَحْتَجُّ" means to present a valid argument or to debate, and (bil-haqqi) "بِالحَقِّ" means with the truth. Therefore, the Hadith can be understood as emphasizing that one who presents a valid argument based on truth will never be defeated in a debate or argument.

This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is in line with the principles of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of truth and its power in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-Isra (17:81), Allah says,

And say: 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'

This verse highlights the inherent strength and ultimate victory of truth over falsehood.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:18), Allah states,

Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.

This verse illustrates how truth shatters falsehood and exposes its weakness and vulnerability.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that when engaging in discussions or debates, it is crucial to base our arguments on truth and evidence. By doing so, we align ourselves with the divine principles of justice and righteousness.

When one argues by truth, they possess a strong foundation that cannot be easily shaken. Truth has a compelling force that resonates with the hearts and minds of people. It has the power to persuade and convince even the most stubborn individuals. When we present our arguments with sincerity and integrity, rooted in the truth, we create a solid platform for dialogue and understanding.

Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his teachings continue to guide Muslims to this day. By acquiring knowledge and understanding the truth, we equip ourselves with the necessary tools to argue and debate effectively.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we argue by truth, we are invincible. By adhering to the principles of truth and justice, we can engage in meaningful discussions and debates that lead to enlightenment and growth. Let us strive to follow the path of truth and seek knowledge so that we may uphold the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the straight path and grant us success in our pursuit of truth.
