Hadith #8882

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be cautious of engaging in offensive speech. He warns us about the consequences of such speech, as it not only attracts the company of lowly individuals but also repels the noble ones from us.

To understand the depth and significance of this hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (yustahjanu) "يُسْتَهْجَنُ" is derived from the root (hajana) "هَجَنَ", which means to be vile, despicable, or offensive. It refers to speech that is disrespectful, insulting, or hurtful to others. The word (yahbisu) "يَحْبِسُ" is derived from the root (habasa) "حَبَسَ", which means to confine or restrict. It signifies that engaging in offensive speech confines a person to the company of vile individuals, limiting their social circle and reputation. On the other hand, the word (yunaffiru) "يُنَفِّرُ" is derived from the root (nafara) "نَفَرَ", which means to repel or drive away. It implies that offensive speech repels the honorable and virtuous people, distancing them from the person who engages in such speech.

To further comprehend the significance of this hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from offensive speech and ridiculing others. It reminds us that we should not judge or belittle others, as their true worth may be greater than what appears on the surface.

In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands us,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of speaking the truth and being just, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It teaches us the value of using our speech to uphold justice and righteousness, rather than engaging in offensive or deceitful speech.

The consequences of offensive speech can be far-reaching. It not only damages relationships and tarnishes reputations but also creates divisions within society. When we engage in offensive speech, we isolate ourselves from the company of honorable individuals who value respect, kindness, and compassion. Conversely, we attract the company of those who thrive on negativity, gossip, and ill intentions. This hadith serves as a reminder that our words have a profound impact on our social interactions and the perception others have of us.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, which he acquired through his close association with the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his deep understanding of the Quran. His advice in this hadith reflects his profound insight into the consequences of offensive speech. By cautioning us against engaging in such speech, he guides us towards a path of righteousness, unity, and respect.

As Muslims, we should strive to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran. We should be mindful of our words, ensuring that they are always respectful, kind, and beneficial. Let us remember that our speech has the power to either bring people together or drive them apart. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to speak words that uplift and unite, and protect us from engaging in offensive speech.
