Hadith #10117

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كُلُّ طَيْر يَأْوي إلى شَكْلِهِ۔

This can be translated as,

Every bird stays close to its [own] kind.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and can be understood in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word (tayr) "طَيْر" in Arabic refers to a bird. Birds are known for their unique characteristics and traits, and they have a natural inclination to flock together with birds of their own species. This instinctual behavior ensures their survival, as they find safety, companionship, and support within their own kind.

This Hadith can be seen as a metaphor for human behavior and social interactions. Just as birds naturally gravitate towards their own kind, humans also have a tendency to associate with those who share similar characteristics, beliefs, and values. This inclination is deeply rooted in our nature and can be observed in various aspects of our lives, such as friendships, communities, and even nations.

The Quran provides several verses that shed light on the importance of surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:118)

O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason

This verse emphasizes the significance of choosing our companions wisely. Associating with individuals who do not share our values and beliefs can lead to harm and ruin. Such people may harbor ill intentions and may not have our best interests at heart. Therefore, it is crucial to surround ourselves with individuals who share our principles and support our spiritual and moral growth.

Another verse that aligns with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 60:1)

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth

This verse highlights the importance of aligning ourselves with those who share our faith and values. It warns against forming close relationships with individuals who oppose the truth and harbor enmity towards our beliefs. By staying close to our own kind, we can maintain our faith, protect our values, and preserve our spiritual well-being.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the company they keep. It encourages us to seek companionship with those who share our commitment to righteousness, piety, and the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can create an environment that nurtures our spiritual growth, strengthens our faith, and supports us on the path towards attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
