لا تَنْجَعُ الرِّياضَةُ إلاّ في نَفْس يَقِظَة (يقِظة وهِمَّة)۔
Discipline is not beneficial except in a woken soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Discipline)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا تَنْجَعُ الرِّياضَةُ إلاّ في نَفْس يَقِظَة (يقِظة وهِمَّة)۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of discipline and self-awareness in order to benefit from physical exercise. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (riyadah) "رِيَاضَةُ" in this Hadith refers to physical exercise or sports. It encompasses activities that promote physical fitness and well-being. The term (nafs) "نَفْس" means soul or self. It represents the inner being of an individual. The word (yaqizah) "يَقِظَة" refers to being awake or alert, while (himma) "هِمَّة" signifies determination or willpower.
To understand the significance of discipline and self-awareness in physical exercise, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of moderation and balance in all aspects of life, including physical activities. It encourages Muslims to engage in beneficial actions while avoiding extremes that may harm oneself.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:70), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, We have honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
This verse reminds us of the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), including the physical capabilities and faculties that enable us to engage in physical exercise. It is our duty to take care of these blessings and utilize them in a way that benefits our overall well-being.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The Imam emphasizes that discipline and self-awareness are essential for reaping the true benefits of physical exercise. Merely engaging in physical activities without a conscious and alert mindset will not yield the desired results.
When we exercise with discipline and self-awareness, we are more likely to maintain proper form, avoid injuries, and achieve our fitness goals effectively. It requires us to be mindful of our body's needs, limitations, and capabilities. By being fully present in the moment and focusing on the task at hand, we can maximize the benefits of our physical endeavors.
Moreover, discipline and self-awareness extend beyond the physical realm. They also encompass our mental and spiritual well-being. By cultivating discipline and self-awareness in our daily lives, we can enhance our overall character and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on discipline and self-awareness serves as a reminder for Muslims to approach all aspects of life with mindfulness and intentionality. Whether it is our worship, relationships, or personal development, we should strive to be fully present and conscious of our actions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that physical exercise is only beneficial when accompanied by discipline and self-awareness. By incorporating these qualities into our fitness routines, we can not only improve our physical health but also nurture our mental and spiritual well-being. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to lead balanced and purposeful lives.
