اَلعارِفُ مَنْ عَرَفَ نَفْسَهُ فَأَعْتَقَها، ونَزَّهَها عَنْ كُلِّ ما يُبَعِّدُها وَيُوبِقُها۔

The cognizant one is he who knows his soul and thus frees it and purifies it from all that distances it [from the Truth] and destroys it.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and self-purification. Let us delve into the words of this profound Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (the cognizant one) "العارِفُ", (knows) "عَرَفَ", (his soul) "نَفْسَهُ", (frees it) "أَعْتَقَها", (purifies it) "نَزَّهَها", (distances it) "يُبَعِّدُها", and (destroys it) "يُوبِقُها".

To understand the significance of self-awareness and self-purification, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:14-15),

No! I swear by the self-reproaching soul. Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?

These verses highlight the importance of introspection and self-reflection, as the soul itself reproaches and holds itself accountable.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Shams (91:7-10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it. And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness. He has succeeded who purifies it.

These verses emphasize the divine inspiration within the soul, which enables it to distinguish between good and evil. Success lies in purifying the soul from its vices and nurturing its virtues.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to become cognizant of our own souls. This means acquiring deep self-knowledge, understanding our strengths and weaknesses, and recognizing the factors that influence our behavior. By doing so, we can free our souls from the shackles of ignorance, desires, and negative influences.

Self-purification is the next step highlighted in the Hadith. It involves cleansing the soul from all that distances it from the Truth and destroys it. This purification process requires constant vigilance and effort. It entails striving to rid ourselves of harmful habits, negative emotions, and sinful actions. By purifying our souls, we align ourselves with the divine purpose and cultivate virtues such as patience, gratitude, and compassion.

The consequences of self-awareness and self-purification are profound. When we know ourselves and purify our souls, we become more attuned to the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We develop a stronger connection with our Creator and are better equipped to navigate the challenges of life. Our actions become more aligned with the teachings of Islam, and we become a source of goodness and inspiration for others.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of introspection and self-improvement. It is not enough to merely perform outward acts of worship; we must also strive to purify our inner selves. By doing so, we can attain true success and fulfillment in this world and the Hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to know ourselves, purify our souls, and strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives. May He guide us on the path of self-awareness and self-purification, and may He grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
