إنَّما مَثَلي بَيْنَكُمْ كَالسِّراجِ في الظُّلْمَةِ، يَسْتَضِيءُ بِها مَنْ وَلَجَها۔

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he beautifully compares his presence among the Muslims to a lamp in the darkness. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meanings in light of the Quran.

The word (my example) "مَثَلِي" emphasizes the unique position and role of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) among the Muslims. Just as a lamp illuminates the darkness, Imam Ali's presence illuminates the hearts and minds of the believers. His knowledge, wisdom, and guidance are like a beacon of light that dispels ignorance and confusion.

The word (lamp) "سِرَاج" signifies the source of light and guidance. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes Himself as (the Light of the heavens and the earth) "نُورُ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ" (Quran 24:35). This divine light is reflected in the presence of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who is a manifestation of Allah's guidance on earth.

The phrase (in the darkness) "فِي ٱلظُّلْمَةِ" symbolizes the state of ignorance, confusion, and moral decay that prevails in society. It represents the absence of divine guidance and the need for a guiding light to navigate through the challenges of life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is that guiding light, who brings clarity, righteousness, and justice to a world engulfed in darkness.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for supporting verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:122):

Is he who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom?

This verse highlights the transformative power of divine guidance, which brings life to the spiritually dead and provides them with a light to navigate through the darkness of ignorance.

Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-A'raf (7:157):

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of following the Prophet () and the divine light that he brought, which is also embodied in the presence of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) analogy of the lamp in the darkness carries profound implications. Just as a lamp guides and illuminates the path for those who seek its light, Imam Ali's presence and teachings provide guidance, enlightenment, and direction for the Muslims. Those who approach him with sincerity and humility will benefit from his wisdom and knowledge, just as those who approach a lamp in darkness receive its light.

Moreover, this Hadith highlights the responsibility of the believers to seek Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance and to benefit from his teachings. It serves as a reminder that true enlightenment and guidance can only be attained by turning towards the divinely appointed leaders and sources of knowledge within the Islamic tradition.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) about his presence among the Muslims being like a lamp in the darkness beautifully illustrates his role as a source of guidance, knowledge, and enlightenment. Just as a lamp dispels darkness and illuminates the path, Imam Ali's presence brings clarity, righteousness, and justice to the lives of the believers. It is our duty as Muslims to seek his guidance and benefit from his teachings, for he is a shining example of divine light in a world engulfed in darkness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize and follow the light of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
