What reason has a human being to be proud when his beginning is a drop of semen and his end is a carcass; neither can he sustain himself nor can he repel his [own] death!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Pride And Boasting)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims, regardless of their sect, about the insignificance of pride and arrogance in the face of our humble beginnings and inevitable end. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.
The Hadith begins with Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) stating,
What reason has a human being to be proud when his beginning is a drop of semen and his end is a carcass.
Here, the Imam highlights the reality of our creation and ultimate destiny. He reminds us that our origin is a mere drop of semen, emphasizing the insignificance of our initial state. This serves as a humbling reminder that no matter how great we may perceive ourselves to be, our beginning is rooted in a state of vulnerability and dependency.
To further emphasize this point, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:12-14),
And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
These verses beautifully illustrate the stages of human development, highlighting our humble beginnings as a mere drop of semen. They serve as a reminder that our creation is a miraculous process orchestrated by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and it is through His power and mercy that we come into existence.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) continues by stating,
neither can he sustain himself nor can he repel his [own] death.
This part of the Hadith emphasizes our inherent limitations as human beings. Despite our advancements in science, technology, and medicine, we remain utterly dependent on Allah's sustenance for our survival. We cannot sustain ourselves without His blessings and provisions.
The Quran affirms this truth in numerous verses, reminding us of our reliance on Allah's sustenance. In Surah Al-An'am (6:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Say, 'Indeed, Allah holds the provision for all of His servants, and He gives provision to whom He wills, and He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.'
Furthermore, the Hadith highlights that we cannot repel our own death. This serves as a reminder of our mortality and the inevitability of our eventual return to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a call to humility and a reminder that no matter how powerful or influential we may become in this world, we are ultimately powerless in the face of death.
The Quran repeatedly reminds us of the certainty of death and the transient nature of this worldly life. In Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of humility and the futility of pride and arrogance. Our humble beginnings and inevitable end should serve as a constant reminder of our dependence on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the transient nature of this worldly life. It is through recognizing our limitations and seeking Allah's guidance and mercy that we can attain true success and salvation.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to reflect upon the profound teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and guide us on the path of humility and righteousness. Ameen.
