(Ghurar al-Hikam: Consultation And Deliberation)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Consult before you decide and think before you proceed.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking advice and reflecting before making any decisions or taking any actions. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (shaawir) "شاوِرْ" in the Hadith means to consult or seek advice. It highlights the significance of seeking counsel from others, especially those who possess knowledge and wisdom. This act of consultation is not only encouraged but also considered a commendable practice in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran in Surah Al-Imran, verse 159:

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse demonstrates the importance of consulting and seeking the opinions of others, even for the Prophet Muhammad () himself. It shows that consultation is a means of fostering unity, understanding, and making informed decisions. By seeking advice, we can benefit from the diverse perspectives and expertise of others, leading to better outcomes.

The word (fakkir) "فَكِّرْ" in the Hadith means to think or reflect. It emphasizes the need to ponder and contemplate before taking any action. This is in line with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly encourages believers to use their intellect and reflect upon His signs. In Surah Al-Hashr, verse 21, Allah says:

If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.

This verse highlights the power of reflection and contemplation. It reminds us that by engaging our intellect and pondering over the signs of Allah, we can gain a deeper understanding of His wisdom and guidance. When we think before we act, we are more likely to make decisions that align with our values and have positive consequences.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is timeless and applicable to all aspects of life. Whether it is personal matters, family decisions, or community affairs, seeking consultation and reflecting before making decisions can lead to better outcomes. It prevents hasty and impulsive actions that may have negative consequences.

For example, imagine a Muslim community facing a challenging situation. By consulting with various community members, including scholars, leaders, and stakeholders, they can gather different perspectives and insights. This inclusive approach ensures that decisions are made with the best interests of the community in mind. Additionally, by reflecting on the potential consequences of different courses of action, they can choose the path that aligns with Islamic principles and values.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Consult before you decide and think before you proceed

emphasizes the importance of seeking advice and reflecting before making decisions or taking actions. This guidance is supported by the Quranic verses that encourage consultation and reflection. By following this advice, Muslims can make informed decisions that are guided by wisdom, knowledge, and the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek counsel and reflect in all aspects of our lives.
