Hadith #583

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The above Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights a profound truth about the nature of life and the passage of time. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The [final] destination is in front of you and time is behind you, pushing you [forward].

This statement encapsulates the concept of life as a journey towards a final destination, and the relentless progression of time that propels us towards that destination.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (ghayah) "غاية" refers to the ultimate goal or destination. It signifies the purpose and objective that every individual strives to achieve in their life. The word (amamakum) "أمامكم" means

in front of you,

indicating that the destination lies ahead, within our reach and vision.

On the other hand, the word (saa'ah) "ساعة" denotes time, specifically the passage of time. It represents the temporal dimension of our existence, constantly moving forward, irrespective of our desires or efforts. The word (wara'akum) "وراءكم" means "behind you," signifying that time is always trailing us, urging us to move forward and make the most of the opportunities that come our way.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Asr, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience

This Quranic verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing time wisely and investing it in actions that bring us closer to Allah and benefit humanity.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 60:1)

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you have come out for jihad in My cause and seeking means to My approval, [take them not as friends]. You confide to them affection, but I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have declared. And whoever does it among you has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way

This verse highlights the importance of aligning our actions and alliances with the truth, even if it means facing opposition or difficulty. It reminds us that our ultimate goal should be seeking the pleasure of Allah, and we should not compromise our faith for the sake of worldly gains or temporary alliances.
