Struggling against the enemies in their dominions and fighting against them despite their power is abandoning the command of Allah and exposing oneself to the tribulations of this world.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Enmity And The Enemy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of struggling against the enemies in their dominions and fighting against them, even if they possess great power. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that such a struggle is a manifestation of abandoning the command of Allah and exposing oneself to the tribulations of this world.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words and their implications. The word (struggling) "مُجاهَدَةُ" refers to exerting effort and striving in the path of Allah. It encompasses both physical and spiritual struggles. The word (enemies) "الأعْداءِ" refers to those who oppose the truth and seek to harm the believers. (their dominions) "دَوْلَتِهِمْ" signifies the territories or areas where the enemies hold power and authority. (fighting against them) "مُناضَلَتُهُمْ" implies engaging in combat and resistance against the enemies.
In order to comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 190:
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.
This verse highlights the obligation to defend oneself against aggression and oppression. It encourages Muslims to stand up against their enemies, even if they possess superior power. The act of fighting against the enemies is a means of upholding justice and protecting the rights of the believers.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 60, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows.
This verse emphasizes the importance of being prepared and equipped to confront the enemies. It highlights the need to utilize all available resources and capabilities to deter and defeat those who oppose the truth.
The exegesis of this Hadith reveals profound insights into the mindset of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his approach to dealing with the enemies of Islam. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and he understood the importance of standing firm against oppression and injustice. He recognized that failing to resist the enemies and allowing them to dominate would be tantamount to abandoning the command of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words also highlight the potential consequences of not engaging in the struggle against the enemies. By refraining from fighting against the oppressors, the believers risk subjecting themselves to the tribulations of this world. This can manifest in various forms, such as loss of freedom, erosion of rights, and the spread of corruption. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to actively resist and fight against the enemies, even if they appear to be powerful.
