لا تَجْتَمِعُ الفِطْنَةُ وَالْبِطْنَةُ۔
Gluttony and astuteness do not go together.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Overeating And Gluttony)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا تَجْتَمِعُ الفِطْنَةُ وَالْبِطْنَةُ۔
This statement highlights the incompatibility of two qualities: gluttony and astuteness. Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore the profound wisdom behind this statement.
The word (fitnah) "فِطْنَةُ" refers to astuteness, intelligence, or discernment. It is the ability to perceive and understand things deeply, to make wise decisions, and to possess a sharp intellect. On the other hand, (batnah) "الْبِطْنَةُ" refers to gluttony or overindulgence in food. It signifies an excessive desire for consumption, often leading to the neglect of other important aspects of life.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
This verse emphasizes the importance of intellect and understanding. It highlights the distinction between humans who possess the ability to comprehend and reflect, and those who are consumed by their desires and live in a state of heedlessness. Gluttony, being a manifestation of excessive desire, can cloud one's intellect and hinder their ability to perceive and understand the deeper realities of life.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against indulging in excess and overindulgence. He says,
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
This verse reminds us of the importance of moderation in all aspects of life, including our consumption of food. Excessive indulgence in food can lead to physical and spiritual harm, as it diverts our attention away from the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of knowledge. It distracts us from fulfilling our responsibilities and can lead to a lack of productivity and spiritual growth.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, highlights the incompatibility of gluttony and astuteness. When one is consumed by their desires and indulges excessively in food, their ability to think critically and make wise decisions is compromised. Such a person becomes preoccupied with satisfying their physical cravings, neglecting the pursuit of knowledge and the development of their intellect.
Moreover, gluttony can have detrimental consequences on an individual's physical and mental well-being. It can lead to obesity, health issues, and a lack of self-control. It can also create a barrier between the individual and their spiritual growth, as excessive indulgence in worldly pleasures can distract one from the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of balance and moderation in all aspects of life. It reminds us that excessive indulgence in food can hinder our ability to think critically, make wise decisions, and pursue knowledge. By maintaining control over our desires and practicing moderation, we can nurture our intellect, strengthen our spirituality, and lead a balanced and fulfilling life. May Allah guide us all on the path of wisdom and righteousness.
