(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) poses a thought-provoking question to the Muslims. He asks,

Where are the ones who were larger in numbers, had stronger armies and had greater effect?

This question highlights the importance of true strength and power in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve deeper into the words used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this hadith. The word (a'adda) "أعَدَّ" refers to those who were larger in numbers or had a greater quantity. It signifies a multitude or a large group of people. The word (aknafa) "أكْنَفَ" means to have stronger armies or to be more powerful in terms of military might. It denotes a force that is well-equipped and formidable. Lastly, the word (atharan) "آثاراً" refers to the impact or effect that these individuals or groups had on society or history.

To understand the deeper meaning of this hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13:

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true greatness lies not in numbers or worldly power, but in righteousness and piety.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 30, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

This verse reminds us that even in the face of adversity, the believers should not be disheartened by the apparent strength of their enemies. Allah's plans are far superior, and He is the ultimate source of strength and victory.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) question challenges the conventional understanding of power and success. It urges us to reflect on the true sources of strength and influence. History is replete with examples of powerful nations and empires that rose to prominence but eventually crumbled due to their moral decay and disregard for justice. On the other hand, we find individuals and groups who, despite their small numbers and limited resources, have left an indelible mark on humanity through their righteousness and adherence to divine principles.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself is a shining example of this truth. His knowledge, wisdom, and piety were unparalleled, making him a beacon of guidance for Muslims throughout history. Despite facing numerous challenges and betrayals, he remained steadfast in his commitment to justice and truth. His impact on the Islamic civilization and the hearts of believers continues to resonate to this day.

This hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize spiritual strength over materialistic pursuits. It encourages us to seek knowledge, cultivate good character, and uphold justice in all aspects of our lives. True success lies not in the accumulation of wealth or power, but in the strength of our faith and the righteousness of our actions.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) question challenges our conventional understanding of power and success. It reminds us that true strength lies in righteousness and piety, not in numbers or worldly might. By reflecting on the Quranic verses and the exemplary life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are inspired to prioritize spiritual growth and strive for excellence in our character and actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
