اَلعِفافُ يَصُونُ النَّفْسَ، ويُنَزِّهُها عَنِ الدَّنايا۔
Chastity preserves the soul and purifies it from vile demerits.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Chastity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of chastity in preserving and purifying the soul from vile demerits. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (chastity) "عِفَاف" refers to the state of being pure, modest, and free from any immoral or indecent behavior. It encompasses the preservation of one's physical, emotional, and spiritual purity. Chastity is a virtue that safeguards the soul from the corrupting influences of the world and helps maintain a righteous and dignified character.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of chastity in several verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah says, (Quran 23:5-7)
And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining chastity in one's relationships and refraining from any form of sexual misconduct outside the bounds of marriage.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur, Allah says, (Quran 24:30-31)
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed
These verses highlight the need for both men and women to exercise modesty in their interactions and to guard their private parts. They emphasize the importance of lowering one's gaze and protecting oneself from engaging in any indecent or immoral behavior. This is a clear indication of the significance of chastity in Islam.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith further emphasizes that chastity not only preserves the soul but also purifies it from vile demerits. When a person practices chastity, they distance themselves from sinful and immoral actions, thereby purifying their soul from the negative consequences of such behavior. Chastity acts as a shield against the corrupting influences of the world and helps maintain a pure and virtuous character.
By adhering to the principles of chastity, Muslims are able to cultivate a strong sense of self-control and discipline. This enables them to resist temptations and avoid engaging in actions that are detrimental to their spiritual well-being. Chastity also fosters a sense of respect and honor towards oneself and others, promoting healthy and dignified relationships.
Moreover, practicing chastity leads to a higher level of self-awareness and consciousness. It allows individuals to focus on their spiritual growth and development, enabling them to attain a higher level of closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By purifying the soul from vile demerits, one can experience a profound sense of inner peace and tranquility.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of chastity in preserving and purifying the soul from vile demerits. By practicing chastity, Muslims are able to maintain their purity and righteousness, safeguarding themselves from the corrupting influences of the world. This virtue is emphasized in the Quran as well, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs believers to guard their private parts and exercise modesty in their interactions. May we all strive to cultivate and uphold the virtue of chastity in our lives, for it is a means of attaining spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
