إنَّ العِلْمَ يَهْدي، ويُرْشِدُ، ويُنْجي، وإنَّ الجَهْلَ يُغْوي، ويُضِلُّ، ويُرْدي۔
Verily knowledge guides, directs and saves while ignorance misguides, misdirects and destroys.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound significance of knowledge and the dire consequences of ignorance. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its deeper meanings and drawing upon the guidance of the Quran.
The word (knowledge) "عِلْمَ" in this Hadith refers to the understanding and awareness of the truth. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Knowledge is a guiding light that illuminates the path towards righteousness and salvation. It serves as a compass, directing individuals towards the right course of action. The Quran affirms the importance of knowledge in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse emphasizes the superiority of knowledge over ignorance.
Furthermore, the Hadith states that knowledge not only guides but also saves. It is through knowledge that individuals are able to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. By acquiring knowledge, Muslims are equipped with the tools to navigate the challenges of life and make informed decisions. The Quran reinforces this notion in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.
Conversely, the Hadith warns against the perils of ignorance. Ignorance is a state of unawareness and lack of understanding. It leads individuals astray, causing them to deviate from the right path. Ignorance blinds people to the truth and hinders their ability to make sound judgments. The Quran cautions against ignorance in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear.
Moreover, the Hadith states that ignorance not only misguides but also destroys. Ignorance breeds chaos, confusion, and harm. It leads to the perpetuation of falsehood, injustice, and oppression. Ignorance can have severe consequences on both an individual and societal level. The Quran emphasizes the destructive nature of ignorance in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize the immense value of knowledge and the dangers of remaining ignorant. As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to seek knowledge and strive for intellectual growth. We should engage in continuous learning, not only in matters of religion but also in various fields of knowledge. By doing so, we equip ourselves with the tools to navigate the complexities of life, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, serves as a role model for us in our pursuit of knowledge. His teachings and insights continue to inspire Muslims across generations. Let us follow in his footsteps, seeking knowledge, and utilizing it to guide, direct, and save ourselves and others from the perils of ignorance.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge, understand the truth, and act upon it. May He protect us from the pitfalls of ignorance and guide us on the path of righteousness. Ameen.
