كَفى بِالمَرْءِ كَيْساً أنْ يَقِفَ عَلى مَعائِبِهِ، ويَقْتَصِدَ في مَطالِبِهِ۔

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that it is a sign of true wisdom for a person to focus on recognizing their own flaws rather than constantly criticizing and pointing out the flaws of others. Furthermore, he advises individuals to be moderate in their desires and ambitions.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (kaysan) "كَيْساً" refers to sagacity, wisdom, or intelligence. It implies the ability to make sound judgments and decisions. (ma'aibih) "مَعائِبِهِ" refers to one's own flaws or shortcomings, while (matalibih) "مَطالِبِهِ" refers to one's desires or ambitions.

To support the exegesis of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of refraining from ridiculing or belittling others. It encourages us to focus on our own self-improvement rather than constantly finding faults in others. By recognizing our own flaws and striving to rectify them, we can cultivate a sense of humility and personal growth.

Another verse that aligns with the teachings of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:37), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

This verse reminds us of the importance of moderation and humility in our ambitions and desires. It advises against arrogance and excessive pride. By being moderate in our aspirations and not seeking to exceed our limits, we can maintain a balanced and contented life.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true wisdom lies in recognizing our own flaws and striving to improve ourselves. Instead of focusing on the faults of others, we should turn inward and reflect on our own actions, intentions, and character. This self-reflection allows us to identify areas for growth and development, leading to personal and spiritual advancement.

By being moderate in our desires and ambitions, we avoid falling into the trap of excessive materialism or greed. We learn to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to be content with what we have. This moderation helps us maintain a balanced and harmonious life, free from the anxieties and stress that come with chasing endless desires.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of self-reflection, recognizing our own flaws, and being moderate in our desires. By focusing on our own self-improvement and avoiding excessive criticism of others, we can cultivate wisdom, humility, and contentment. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of self-improvement and grant us the wisdom to recognize our own shortcomings.
