مِنَ الغِرَّةِ بِاللّهِ سُبْحانَهُ أنْ يُصِرَّ المَرْءُ عَلَى المَعْصِيَةِ ويَتَمَنَّى المَغْفِرَةَ۔
When a person persists in sinning and [still] expects to be forgiven, then he is under a delusion about Allah, the Glorified.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Delusion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the delusion of a person who continues to persist in sinning while expecting forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (ghirrah) "غِرَّةِ" in the Hadith refers to a state of delusion or deception. It signifies a false belief or misconception that leads one to think that they can continue to commit sins without facing any consequences or accountability.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims that seeking forgiveness from Allah is not merely a matter of uttering words or making empty promises. It requires sincere repentance, a genuine intention to change, and a conscious effort to abstain from committing the same sins again. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is indeed the Most Merciful and Forgiving, but He also expects His servants to strive towards righteousness and avoid persisting in sinful behavior.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of sincere repentance and the consequences of persisting in sin. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:160),
Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse highlights that true repentance, accompanied by belief and righteous actions, leads to the forgiveness and mercy of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:17-18), Allah warns against persisting in sin while expecting forgiveness, stating,
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin. Do they not know that Allah accepts repentance from His servants and receives their contributions and that Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful?
These verses from the Quran reinforce the message of the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and emphasize the importance of sincere repentance and the need to refrain from persisting in sinful behavior. Allah is indeed the Most Forgiving and Merciful, but His forgiveness is not to be taken for granted. It is a blessing that is granted to those who sincerely seek it and strive to rectify their actions.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can understand that persisting in sin while expecting forgiveness is a form of self-deception. It shows a lack of understanding of Allah's justice and His expectations from His servants. It is essential for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions, seek forgiveness for their sins, and strive to improve themselves. True repentance involves a deep sense of remorse, a commitment to change, and a sincere desire to seek Allah's pleasure.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to sincere repentance and protect us from the delusion of persisting in sin while expecting forgiveness. May He grant us the strength and wisdom to continuously strive towards righteousness and seek His forgiveness with sincerity and humility. Ameen.
