(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the destructive consequences of being pleased with oneself and relying solely on one's own judgment. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (pleased with oneself) "رَضِيَ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ" and (relies on that which his soul has made decorous for him)

وَثِقَ بِمَا تُسَوِّلُهُ لَهُ

To understand the significance of being pleased with oneself, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Isra (17:53) that those who are pleased with themselves and their actions without seeking guidance from Allah are indeed misguided. They become arrogant and fail to recognize their own shortcomings. This self-satisfaction blinds them from seeking improvement and guidance from the Divine.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also reminds us in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50) that those who rely on their own desires and whims, without seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (), are indeed astray. Such individuals are driven by their own subjective inclinations, which may lead them away from the path of righteousness and into destruction.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes the consequences of being pleased with oneself and relying on one's own judgment. This attitude can lead to a false sense of security and complacency. When one becomes content with their own actions and decisions, they may fail to recognize their mistakes, weaknesses, and areas in need of improvement. This lack of self-awareness can hinder personal growth and spiritual development.

Moreover, relying solely on one's own judgment can lead to arrogance and a disregard for the wisdom and guidance provided by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Quran. Allah reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13) that true honor and superiority lie not in one's lineage or wealth, but in one's piety and righteousness. By relying on our own judgment, we risk falling into the trap of self-righteousness and failing to seek the guidance of Allah and His Messenger ().

The consequences of being pleased with oneself and relying on one's own judgment are indeed severe. It can lead to spiritual destruction, as one becomes detached from the Divine guidance and falls into the traps of arrogance, ignorance, and complacency. This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly seek self-improvement, self-reflection, and guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet ().

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words carry great weight and significance. As Muslims, it is our duty to reflect upon his teachings and apply them in our lives. We must strive to be humble, constantly seeking guidance from Allah and recognizing our own limitations. By doing so, we can avoid the destructive path of self-satisfaction and reliance on our own judgment, and instead, find true success and guidance in the light of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet ().

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize our own shortcomings, the humility to seek guidance from Him, and the strength to follow the path of righteousness. Ameen.
