(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The constant remembrance [of Allah] is nourishment for the souls and the key to righteousness.

This wise utterance highlights the importance of continuously remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and its profound impact on our spiritual well-being.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (mudaawamatu) "مُداوَمَةُ" refers to continuity or constancy. It emphasizes the need for consistent and uninterrupted remembrance of Allah. The word (adh-dhikr) "الذِّكْرِ" refers to the remembrance of Allah, which encompasses various forms of worship such as prayer, recitation of the Quran, supplication, and reflection on His attributes and blessings.

The Hadith states that this constant remembrance is (quwatul-arwaah) "قُوتُ الأرْواحِ", which can be translated as

nourishment for the souls.

Just as our physical bodies require sustenance to thrive, our souls also need nourishment to flourish. The remembrance of Allah acts as spiritual sustenance, revitalizing and strengthening our souls. It provides us with the energy and motivation to fulfill our duties and responsibilities as Muslims.

To support this concept, we find numerous verses in the Quran that emphasize the importance of remembrance of Allah. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:152)

And remember Me; I will remember you

This verse highlights the reciprocal nature of remembrance. When we remember Allah, He, in turn, remembers us, showering us with His blessings and mercy.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ra'd, Allah states, (Quran 13:28)

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured

This verse emphasizes that the remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and peace to the hearts of believers. It serves as a source of comfort and solace, especially during times of hardship and adversity.

The Hadith also describes the constant remembrance of Allah as (miftaahus-salaah) "مِفْتاحُ الصَّلاحِ", which can be translated as

the key to righteousness.

This phrase highlights the pivotal role that remembrance plays in attaining righteousness and piety. When we are constantly aware of Allah's presence and His commandments, it becomes easier for us to adhere to His guidance and avoid sinful actions.

The Quran supports this notion in Surah Al-Ankabut, where Allah says, (Quran 29:45)

And establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing

Regular remembrance of Allah through prayer helps us develop self-discipline and self-control, preventing us from engaging in sinful behavior.

Moreover, in Surah Al-A'raf, Allah states, (Quran 7:205)

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless

This verse emphasizes the importance of internalizing the remembrance of Allah and making it a constant part of our lives. It reminds us to be mindful of Allah's presence at all times, seeking His guidance and protection.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of continuous remembrance of Allah as a means of nourishing our souls and attaining righteousness. By constantly remembering Allah, we strengthen our connection with Him, find solace in His remembrance, and develop the key qualities of piety and righteousness. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him constantly and benefit from the nourishment it provides to our souls.
