Hadith #4395

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The word (mujahid) "مُجَاهِدٌ" refers to one who strives or struggles, and (nafsi) "نَفْسِي" refers to the lower self or ego. Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) acknowledges the constant struggle against his own desires and inclinations. He recognizes the importance of self-discipline and self-control in order to overcome the temptations of the lower self and attain spiritual growth.

Lastly, the word (muntaheen) "مُنْتَهٍ" means to reach or end, and (qismi) "قِسْمِي" refers to one's allotted portion or destiny. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) acknowledges that ultimately, his life and its outcomes are determined by Allah. He accepts his portion in life, recognizing that it is a divine decree and submitting to the will of Allah.

To further understand the wise message of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69):

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.

And say: My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's assistance in all aspects of our lives. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognizes that his sustenance and success ultimately come from Allah. By relying on Him and seeking His support, he ensures that his efforts are guided and blessed.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words also remind us of the importance of contentment and acceptance of our destiny. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:22-23), Allah says:

No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy - In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) recognizes that his portion in life is determined by Allah's wisdom and knowledge. He does not despair over what he may lack nor does he become arrogant over what he has been given. Instead, he accepts his destiny with humility and gratitude, understanding that true success lies in aligning oneself with the will of Allah.
