إنَّكُمْ مَدينُونَ بِما قَدَّمْتُمْ، ومُرْتَهَنُونَ بِما أسْلَفْتُمْ۔
Verily you are judged by what you send forth and held hostage by what you leave behind.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily you are judged by what you send forth and held hostage by what you leave behind.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of our actions and their consequences in this world and the hereafter.
Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith by examining the key words and their meanings. The word (madyun) "مَدينُونَ" is derived from the root word (dayn) "دَيْن", which means debt or obligation. It signifies that we are indebted to our actions, as they have a lasting impact on our lives. The word (qaddamtum) "قَدَّمْتُمْ" is derived from the root word (qadama) "قَدَمَ", which means to send forth or to advance. It implies that our actions precede us and are presented before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for judgment.
Furthermore, the word (murtahanun) "مُرْتَهَنُونَ" is derived from the root word (rahana) "رَهَنَ", which means to mortgage or to pledge. It conveys the idea that our actions become a pledge or a guarantee for us in the hereafter. Lastly, the word (aslafatum) "أسْلَفْتُمْ" is derived from the root word (salafa) "سَلَفَ", which means to leave behind or to precede. It signifies that our actions will remain with us even after we have departed from this world.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And We shall record what they send forth and what they leave behind, and all things We have encompassed in a clear register.
This verse affirms the concept that our actions are recorded and will be presented before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for judgment.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned.
This verse emphasizes that we are accountable for our actions and will face the consequences of both our good and evil deeds.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions. It highlights the importance of striving to do good and to leave behind a positive legacy. Our actions in this world have a direct impact on our lives in the hereafter. If we engage in righteous deeds and fulfill our obligations, we will be rewarded. Conversely, if we neglect our responsibilities and engage in sinful actions, we will be held accountable.
For example, if a person consistently performs acts of charity, helps those in need, and upholds justice, they will be judged favorably by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Their good deeds will serve as a means of intercession and reward in the hereafter. On the other hand, if a person engages in dishonesty, oppression, and neglects their obligations, they will be held hostage by their negative actions. These actions will act as a burden and a hindrance in their journey towards salvation.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to reflect upon their actions and strive for self-improvement. It reminds us that our actions have consequences not only in this world but also in the hereafter. Therefore, we should constantly evaluate our deeds, seeking to rectify any shortcomings and increase our good actions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be conscious of their actions. It emphasizes that we are judged by what we send forth and held hostage by what we leave behind. Our actions have a lasting impact on our lives and will be presented before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for judgment. By striving to do good and fulfilling our obligations, we can ensure a positive outcome in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be mindful of our actions and to leave behind a righteous legacy.
