مِنَ الاِقْتِصادِ سَخاءٌ بِغَيْرِ سَرَف، ومُرُوَّةٌ بِغَيْرِ تَلَف۔
Being generous without extravagance and magnanimous without wastefulness is part of moderation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Moderation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of moderation in two aspects: generosity and magnanimity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that being generous without extravagance and being magnanimous without wastefulness are both part of moderation.
Let us delve into the meanings of some important words from this Hadith. The word (iqtisad) "اِقْتِصاد" refers to moderation or balance. It implies avoiding extremes and finding a middle ground. (sakhā') "سَخاءٌ" means generosity, which is the act of giving freely and abundantly. (bi-ghayri saraf) "بِغَيْرِ سَرَف" means without extravagance, indicating that one should not go beyond what is necessary or appropriate. (murawwah) "مُرُوَّةٌ" refers to magnanimity, which is the quality of being noble, forgiving, and tolerant. (bi-ghayri talaf) "بِغَيْرِ تَلَف" means without wastefulness, suggesting that one should not squander resources or engage in excessive spending.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:29):
Do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding both extremes in spending. Being excessively stingy or excessively extravagant can lead to financial difficulties and societal criticism. Moderation in generosity ensures that one gives without burdening oneself or others.
Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the virtue of moderation in Surah Al-A'raf (7:31):
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
This verse reminds us to enjoy the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but to do so in moderation. It is important to strike a balance between fulfilling our needs and desires while avoiding excessiveness, as it displeases Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages Muslims to adopt a moderate approach in their generosity and magnanimity. By being generous without extravagance, we ensure that our acts of giving are sincere and beneficial. We should give within our means, considering the needs of others and the impact of our generosity. This moderation prevents us from depleting our resources and helps us maintain a sustainable and consistent approach to giving.
Similarly, being magnanimous without wastefulness reflects the noble character of a believer. It means being forgiving and tolerant without being excessive in our leniency. We should be kind and compassionate towards others, but not to the extent that it compromises justice or enables wrongdoing. This balance allows us to uphold our principles while still embodying the spirit of forgiveness and mercy.
Practicing moderation in generosity and magnanimity has numerous positive consequences. It fosters a sense of balance and harmony in our personal lives and relationships. It prevents us from falling into the traps of greed, extravagance, and wastefulness. Moreover, it promotes social cohesion and equity within the community, as everyone's needs are considered and met without burdening any individual or group.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the profound wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His knowledge and understanding of Islam were unparalleled, and his teachings continue to guide us today. By embodying the principles of moderation in our generosity and magnanimity, we strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and fulfill the teachings of the Quran.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to practice moderation in all aspects of our lives. May we be generous and magnanimous without falling into extravagance or wastefulness. May our actions be pleasing to Allah and beneficial to humanity. And may we continue to seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
