سُرُورُ الدُّنيا غُرُورٌ، ومَتاعُها ثُبُورٌ۔
The joy of this world is deception and its enjoyment is destruction.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The joy of this world is deception and its enjoyment is destruction.
Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (surur) "سُرُورُ" refers to joy or happiness, while (ghurur) "غُرُورٌ" means deception or illusion. Similarly, (mata'uhā) "مَتاعُها" signifies enjoyment or pleasure, and (thubur) "ثُبُورٌ" denotes destruction or ruin.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse highlights the transient nature of worldly pleasures and the illusion they create. The joy and enjoyment we experience in this world are temporary and fleeting. They may appear enticing and fulfilling, but they ultimately lead to disappointment and destruction. Just as a plant withers and turns to debris, the pleasures of this world fade away, leaving us empty-handed.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Imran (3:185),
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly enjoyment and the true reality of the Hereafter. The pleasures of this world are merely an illusion, a delusion that distracts us from the ultimate purpose of our existence. We must not be deceived by the temporary joys of this world and instead focus on attaining eternal happiness in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the consequences of being attached to the pleasures of this world. By recognizing the deceptive nature of worldly joy and the destructive consequences of its enjoyment, we are encouraged to prioritize our actions and intentions towards the eternal life.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that seeking true happiness and fulfillment lies in aligning our actions with the teachings of Islam. We should not be captivated by the temporary pleasures and distractions of this world, but rather focus on building a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and striving for success in the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the deceptive nature of worldly joy and the destructive consequences of its enjoyment. By seeking guidance from the Quran, we understand that the true purpose of our existence lies in preparing for the eternal life and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May we be guided to prioritize the Hereafter and find true happiness in the obedience and remembrance of Allah.
