Eschew speech about that which does not concern you, and in situations that are inappropriate, for many a word has taken away a blessing and [many] an utterance has brought about bloodshed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to refrain from engaging in unnecessary and inappropriate speech. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that such speech can have detrimental consequences, causing the loss of blessings and even leading to bloodshed.
Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (kalimah) "كَلِمَة" refers to a word or speech, while (ni'mah) "نِعْمَةً" denotes a blessing. The term (lafzah) "لَفْظَة" signifies an utterance or a statement. These words highlight the significance of our words and the impact they can have on our lives and the lives of others.
To further comprehend the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:36)
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking only about matters that we have knowledge of, as we will be held accountable for our words.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of refraining from inappropriate speech, such as ridicule and offensive nicknames, as it can lead to animosity and discord among people.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their words and to speak with wisdom and restraint. Unnecessary and inappropriate speech can lead to the loss of blessings, as mentioned in the Hadith. For example, engaging in gossip or spreading rumors can damage relationships and tarnish reputations, causing the loss of trust and blessings in those relationships.
Moreover, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that certain utterances can even lead to bloodshed. This highlights the potential consequences of our words when used inappropriately or irresponsibly. History has witnessed numerous instances where conflicts and wars were sparked by inflammatory speeches and provocative rhetoric.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of controlling their tongues and speaking only when necessary and in a manner that promotes harmony and understanding. It serves as a call to cultivate the quality of (forbearance) "hilm" and to emulate the wisdom and knowledge of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his eloquence and profound understanding of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their speech. It urges us to refrain from engaging in unnecessary and inappropriate conversations, as they can lead to the loss of blessings and even escalate into conflicts. By adhering to this advice, we can foster a culture of respect, understanding, and peace within our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to choose our words carefully and to speak in a manner that pleases Him.
