Do not be delighted by wealth and comfort, and do not be grieved by poverty and tribulation, for verily gold is tested by fire and the believer is tested by tribulation.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affluence And The Rich)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to not be excessively joyful when they possess wealth and comfort, nor should they be excessively saddened by poverty and tribulation. The Imam draws a parallel between the testing of gold through fire and the testing of a believer through tribulation.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (faraḥ) "فَرَحْ" means to be delighted or excessively joyful. (ghināʾ) "غَنَاء" refers to wealth and material possessions, while (rakhaʾ) "رَخَاء" signifies comfort and luxury. On the other hand, (ghatamma) "غَتَمَّ" means to be grieved or excessively saddened, (faqar) "فَقْر" denotes poverty, and (balāʾ) "بَلَاء" refers to tribulation or hardship.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:28)

And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.

This verse reminds us that wealth and material possessions are merely a test from Allah, and they should not become the sole focus of our lives. Similarly, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes that tribulations and hardships are a part of life, and believers should remain patient and steadfast during such trials.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws a parallel between the testing of gold through fire and the testing of a believer through tribulation. Gold is purified and its impurities are removed through intense heat. Similarly, the believer is tested through various trials and tribulations, which serve to purify their faith, strengthen their character, and increase their reliance on Allah. Just as gold becomes more valuable and precious after being tested, the believer's faith and character are refined and elevated through the trials they face.

The Imam's advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to maintain a balanced approach towards wealth and hardship. Excessive attachment to wealth and comfort can lead to arrogance, greed, and a neglect of one's spiritual duties. On the other hand, excessive grief over poverty and tribulation can lead to despair and a loss of faith in Allah's mercy and provision. Muslims should strive to strike a balance, recognizing that wealth and hardship are temporary tests from Allah, and that true success lies in remaining steadfast and patient during these trials.

This Hadith also highlights the importance of having a strong and unwavering faith in Allah's wisdom and decree. Believers should trust that whatever they face in life is ultimately for their own spiritual growth and development. By embracing the tests and tribulations with patience and reliance on Allah, they can emerge stronger and closer to their Creator.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to not be excessively delighted by wealth and comfort, nor excessively saddened by poverty and tribulation. It reminds us that wealth and hardship are tests from Allah, and that true success lies in maintaining a balanced approach and remaining steadfast in faith. By understanding the deeper meaning of this Hadith and reflecting upon the Quranic verses that support it, Muslims can strive to navigate the challenges of life with patience, trust, and reliance on Allah.
