(Ghurar al-Hikam: Intention)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ حَسُنَتْ نِيَّتُهُ كَثُرَتْ مَثُوبَتُهُ وطابَتْ عيشَتُهُ ووَجَبَتْ مَوَدَّتُهُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having good intentions and highlights the positive consequences that result from such intentions.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (niyyah) "نِيَّة" refers to one's intention or motive behind an action. It is the driving force that determines the sincerity and righteousness of our deeds. The word (kathurat) "كَثُرَتْ" means to increase or multiply, indicating that the rewards of a person with good intentions are multiplied manifold. The word (tabbat) "طابَتْ" means to become good or pleasant, signifying that one's life becomes enriched and contented. Lastly, the word (mawaddah) "مَوَدَّة" refers to affection, love, and friendship, implying that affection for such a person becomes inevitable.

To understand the connotation of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights the importance of having a good intention (Taqwa) in all our actions, as it is the best provision for our journey in this world and the hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.

This verse emphasizes the significance of having a good intention when entering and exiting any situation or endeavor. It is through sincere intentions that we seek the support and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when our intentions are pure and righteous, the rewards for our actions are multiplied. This means that even a small deed done with a good intention can yield immense rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). For example, if a person gives charity with the intention of seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and helping those in need, not only will they be rewarded for the act of charity itself, but their reward will be multiplied due to their sincere intention.

Moreover, when our intentions are pure, our lives become enriched and contented. This is because having good intentions allows us to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we strive to do everything for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we find peace and tranquility in our hearts, regardless of the challenges we may face.

Additionally, the Hadith highlights that affection and love become inevitable for a person with good intentions. When we have sincere intentions and strive to do good, we attract the love and affection of those around us. Our actions and intentions become a source of inspiration for others, and they naturally develop a fondness and respect for us. This love and affection can foster strong relationships and create a positive impact on society as a whole.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of having good intentions in all aspects of our lives. It teaches us that when our intentions are pure, our rewards are multiplied, our lives become enriched, and affection becomes inevitable. By aligning our intentions with the teachings of Islam and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can strive towards a life of righteousness, contentment, and love. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to purify our intentions and bless us with the rewards and blessings of good deeds.
