أهْنَأُ الأقْسامِ اَلقَناعَةُ، وصِحَّةُ الأجْسامِ۔
The most pleasant share is contentment and good health.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The [Allotted] Share)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أهْنَأُ الأقْسامِ اَلقَناعَةُ، وصِحَّةُ الأجْسامِ
which translates to
The most pleasant share is contentment and good health.
This Hadith highlights the importance of two key aspects in our lives: contentment and good health.
Let us begin by understanding the significance of the words used in this Hadith. The word (ahna'u) "أهْنَأُ" refers to the most pleasant or enjoyable share. It signifies the ultimate state of satisfaction and happiness. (al-aqsaam) "الأقْسامِ" refers to the various shares or portions that are distributed among people. It represents the different aspects of life that we all experience. (al-qana'ah) "القَناعَةُ" means contentment or satisfaction with what one has been given. It implies being grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us and not constantly desiring more. (sihhatu) "صِحَّةُ" means good health, both physical and mental well-being, which is crucial for leading a fulfilling life.
To further understand the significance of contentment and good health, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah knows our capabilities and burdens us only with what we can handle. It teaches us to be content with our circumstances, knowing that Allah has chosen what is best for us.
In Surah At-Talaq (65:3), Allah says,
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect.
This verse emphasizes the importance of contentment and trust in Allah's provision. When we are content with what we have, Allah blesses us with unexpected provisions and opens doors of ease for us.
Moreover, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of good health and well-being. It teaches us to seek Allah's protection and blessings for our physical and mental health.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand the profound wisdom behind it. Contentment allows us to find joy and satisfaction in what we have, freeing ourselves from the constant pursuit of material possessions. It helps us appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah and fosters a sense of gratitude.
Similarly, good health is a precious gift from Allah. It enables us to fulfill our responsibilities, worship Him, and serve others. When we are in good health, we have the energy and ability to actively participate in society, contribute to our communities, and seek knowledge. It is through good health that we can lead a balanced and productive life.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights these two aspects as the most pleasant shares in life. By prioritizing contentment and good health, we can find true happiness and fulfillment. Contentment brings peace to our hearts, while good health empowers us to make the most of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of contentment and good health. It reminds us to be grateful for the blessings we have and to take care of our physical and mental well-being. By embodying these qualities, we can lead a life of peace, happiness, and productivity. May Allah grant us the ability to be content and bless us with good health.
