Whoever hides a pain that has afflicted him for three days and complains...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Pain)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of patience and seeking solace in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during times of hardship. The key words in this Hadith are (pain) "وَجَعاً" and (good health) "مُعافِيَهُ".

The word "وَجَعاً" refers to any form of pain, distress, or affliction that one may experience in their life. It could be physical, emotional, or spiritual pain. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to hide this pain within ourselves for an extended period of time. Instead, he encourages us to confide in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His help and healing.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186:

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

This verse assures us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always close to us and ready to respond to our prayers and supplications.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Nahl, verse 53, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.

This verse reminds us that all blessings and favors come from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and when we face difficulties, it is to Him that we should turn for assistance.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of confiding in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during times of pain and distress. By doing so, we acknowledge that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of healing and relief. We express our trust in His infinite wisdom and mercy, knowing that He has the power to restore our good health and alleviate our suffering.

When we keep our pain hidden within ourselves, it can lead to further distress and isolation. However, when we turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and share our pain with Him, we open the door for His divine intervention and guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) knows our innermost thoughts and feelings, and He is the best listener and comforter.

Seeking solace in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not mean that we should neglect seeking medical or professional help when necessary. Rather, it means that we should recognize that true healing comes from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and we should seek His assistance alongside any other means available to us.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of not hiding our pain and distress, but rather confiding in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His help. By doing so, we acknowledge His power to restore our good health and alleviate our suffering. Let us remember that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always near, ready to respond to our prayers and supplications. May we find comfort and strength in turning to Him during times of hardship, and may He grant us healing and peace.
