(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ساءَ خُلْقُهُ قَلاهُ مُصاحِبُهُ ورَفيقُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

One who is of bad character is detested by his companion and associate.

Let us now delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (saa) "ساءَ" in the Hadith refers to someone whose character or conduct is unpleasant or morally corrupt. This person's behavior is such that it is disliked and frowned upon by those around them. The word (khulquhu) "خُلْقُهُ" refers to one's disposition or nature, which encompasses their moral qualities and behavior. The term (qalaahu) "قَلاهُ" means to detest or dislike, while (musahibuhu) "مُصاحِبُهُ" and (rafiquhu) "رَفيقُهُ" refer to one's companion or associate.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good character and warns against the consequences of bad character in several verses.

In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah says, (Quran 68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exalted character of the Prophet Muhammad () and serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for excellence in their conduct and behavior.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah states, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding mockery or derogatory remarks. It highlights the negative consequences of insulting or belittling others, as it tarnishes one's character and leads to disobedience.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) complements these Quranic teachings by emphasizing the impact of one's character on their relationships. It teaches us that a person with bad character will be disliked and detested by their companions and associates. This is a natural consequence of their negative behavior and moral corruption.

For example, if someone consistently lies, cheats, or mistreats others, their companions and associates will naturally distance themselves from them. People are naturally drawn to those with good character, as it creates an atmosphere of trust, respect, and harmony.

Conversely, a person with good character, who embodies the values of honesty, kindness, and integrity, will be loved and respected by their companions and associates. Their positive behavior will attract others towards them and foster strong and meaningful relationships.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly strive for self-improvement and to cultivate good character. It encourages us to reflect upon our own conduct and to rectify any negative traits or behaviors that may repel others. By embodying the teachings of the Quran and the noble examples set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can become individuals who are loved and respected by our companions and associates.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of good character and its impact on our relationships. It reminds us that a person with bad character will be detested by their companions and associates, while a person with good character will be loved and respected. By aligning our behavior with the teachings of the Quran and the noble examples of the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt, we can strive to become individuals who are beloved by those around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to improve our character.
