There are two things that should not be scorned: sickness and the poor...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sickness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

There are two things that should not be scorned: sickness and the poor relative.

This beautiful Hadith highlights the importance of compassion and empathy towards those who are in need, both physically and socially.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (maradh) "مَرَضُ" refers to sickness or illness, while (dhu al-qarabah al-muftaqir) "ذُوالقَرابَةِ" refers to a poor relative. The term (muftaqir) "مُفْتَقِرِ" denotes someone who is in a state of poverty and is in need of assistance.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of caring for the sick and the needy. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:195)

And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good

This verse encourages Muslims to spend their wealth in the way of Allah, which includes helping those who are sick and in need.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah states, (Quran 17:23-24)

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small'

This verse highlights the importance of showing kindness and respect to our relatives, especially when they are in need or old age.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to have empathy and compassion towards those who are sick and in need. Sickness is a test from Allah, and it is our duty to support and care for those who are going through this trial. Similarly, having a poor relative is an opportunity for us to fulfill our obligations towards our family and to strengthen the bonds of kinship.

By not scorning these two situations, we are reminded to approach them with kindness, understanding, and support. When we show compassion towards the sick, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also gain the reward and blessings from Allah. Likewise, when we assist our poor relatives, we strengthen the ties of kinship and create a sense of unity within our families.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom. His statement in this Hadith reflects his deep understanding of the teachings of Islam and the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities towards those in need. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of the struggles faced by the sick and the poor, and to actively seek ways to alleviate their suffering.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of showing compassion and empathy towards the sick and the poor relatives. It encourages us to fulfill our obligations as Muslims and to strive towards creating a society that is caring and supportive. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these teachings and to be a source of comfort and assistance to those in need.
