مَنْ جَعَلَ اللّهَ سُبْحانَهُ مَوْئِلَ رَجائِهِ كَفاهُ أمْرَ دينِهِ ودُنياهُ۔
Whoever makes Allah, the Glorified, the refuge of his hopes, He will suffice him in his religious and worldly affairs.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hope In [The Mercy Of] Allah And [In] Others)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ جَعَلَ اللّهَ سُبْحانَهُ مَوْئِلَ رَجائِهِ كَفاهُ أمْرَ دينِهِ ودُنياهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as the ultimate source of hope and refuge. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (maw'ilah) "مَوْئِلَ" in Arabic refers to a place of refuge or a source of hope. It signifies seeking solace and protection in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone. The word (raja') "رَجَاء" means hope or expectation. It represents the belief that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of all blessings and provisions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we make Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) our refuge and place our hopes in Him, He will suffice us in our religious and worldly affairs. This means that when we rely solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and trust in His wisdom and power, He will take care of all our needs and guide us in every aspect of our lives.
This profound Hadith is beautifully supported by numerous verses from the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah At-Talaq (65:3) that
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse echoes the message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, emphasizing the sufficiency of Allah's support for those who place their trust in Him.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:59), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us that
Indeed, Allah is the best of planners.
This verse highlights the wisdom and planning of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in managing our affairs. When we make Him our refuge, we acknowledge His perfect knowledge and ability to guide us in the best possible way.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives. By making Him our ultimate source of hope and refuge, we free ourselves from the anxieties and worries that come with relying solely on worldly means. This does not mean that we should neglect our responsibilities or cease our efforts, but rather, it reminds us to seek Allah's guidance and support in all our endeavors.
When we place our hopes in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we develop a deep sense of trust and reliance on Him. This trust motivates us to strive for excellence and righteousness, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will take care of our affairs. It gives us the strength to face challenges and overcome obstacles, knowing that Allah's support is always with us.
Moreover, relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as our refuge has profound consequences for our spiritual growth. It deepens our connection with Him and strengthens our faith. It allows us to experience the peace and tranquility that comes from knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is in control of our lives. This reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also helps us develop patience and contentment, as we trust in His divine plan and timing.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of making Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) our refuge and placing our hopes in Him. By relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as the ultimate source of support, we find solace, guidance, and sufficiency in all our religious and worldly affairs. This Hadith is beautifully aligned with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of trusting in Allah's wisdom and relying on His divine plan. May we all strive to make Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) the refuge of our hopes and experience the blessings and peace that come with it.
