Hadith #5754

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

لِكُلِّ شَيْء حيلَةٌ (حِلْيَةٌ وحِلْيَةُ)، وحِيلَةُ المَنْطِقِ الصِّدْقُ۔

This statement can be translated as,

For everything there is an adornment and the adornment of speech is truthfulness.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (hilyah) "حيلة" refers to an adornment or embellishment that enhances the beauty or effectiveness of something. It is like a decoration that adds value and attractiveness. The word (mantiq) "مَنْطِق" refers to speech or discourse, specifically the act of expressing oneself through words. And finally, the word (sidq) "صِّدْقُ" means truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in several verses. In Surah Al-Tawbah, Allah says, (Quran 9:119)

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true

This verse highlights the virtue of being truthful and associating oneself with those who uphold this quality.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Ahzab, Allah praises the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions, saying,

Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing. O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon. It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful. Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be,

Peace.(Quran 33:40-44)

And He has prepared for them a noble reward

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. He states that everything in this world has its own adornment, something that enhances its beauty and effectiveness. And when it comes to speech, the ultimate adornment is truthfulness. This means that the most beautiful and effective way to express ourselves is through honest and sincere words.

When we speak the truth, our words carry weight and impact. They have the power to inspire, guide, and bring people closer to the path of righteousness. Truthful speech is like a radiant light that illuminates the hearts and minds of those who listen. It builds trust, fosters understanding, and strengthens relationships.

On the other hand, falsehood and deceit tarnish the beauty of speech. They weaken its impact and lead to confusion, mistrust, and division among people. Allah warns us against lying and hypocrisy in the Quran, saying, (Quran 40:28)

Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar

Therefore, it is crucial for us as Muslims to prioritize truthfulness in our interactions and strive to be people of integrity.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for us to always speak the truth, even in difficult situations.
