(Ghurar al-Hikam: Judiciousness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The root of determination is judiciousness, and its fruit is victory.

This thought-provoking saying highlights the importance of having a strong resolve and making wise decisions in order to achieve success and triumph.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (determination) "عَزْمِ" refers to a firm resolve and unwavering commitment towards a goal. It signifies the strength of character and the ability to persevere in the face of challenges. The word (judiciousness) "حَزْمُ" refers to making wise and well-thought-out decisions. It implies the ability to weigh the pros and cons, consider the consequences, and choose the most appropriate course of action.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:60)

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

This verse emphasizes the importance of preparation and determination in the face of adversity. It encourages Muslims to equip themselves with the necessary means to defend their faith and protect themselves from any potential harm. This requires making judicious decisions regarding the allocation of resources and the choice of strategies.

Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:200)

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse highlights the importance of perseverance and steadfastness in the face of challenges. It encourages Muslims to remain firm in their faith, to endure hardships, and to fear Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all their actions. This requires a strong determination to overcome obstacles and make wise decisions that align with the teachings of Islam.

Now, let us reflect on the enlightening message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that determination is not merely a matter of willpower, but rather it is rooted in judiciousness. In order to achieve victory, we must make wise decisions that are aligned with the principles of Islam.

For example, when faced with a difficult situation, a Muslim should not rush into hasty actions without considering the potential consequences. Instead, they should carefully assess the situation, weigh the options, and choose the course of action that is most beneficial and in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah.

Furthermore, this Hadith teaches us that determination is not limited to personal goals or achievements. It extends to the greater cause of Islam and the well-being of the Muslim community. Muslims should strive to make judicious decisions that contribute to the betterment of society, promote justice, and uphold the values of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of having a strong resolve and making wise decisions in order to achieve victory. By rooting our determination in judiciousness, we can navigate through challenges and overcome obstacles in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and determination to make judicious decisions and attain success in this life and the Hereafter.
