(Ghurar al-Hikam: Noble Traits & Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ثابِرُوا عََلَى اقْتِناءِ المَكارِمِ، وتَحَمَّلُوا أعْباءَ المَغارِمِ، تُحْرِزُوا قَصَباتِ المَغانِمِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of striving to acquire noble traits and being willing to bear the burdens of others' liabilities, as doing so will lead to the attainment of the greatest gains.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to understand its connotation. The word (thabiroo) "ثابِرُوا" translates to "work hard" or "persevere." It implies a continuous effort and dedication towards a particular goal. In this context, it refers to the continuous pursuit of acquiring noble traits and virtues.

The term (iqti'naa) "اقْتِناءِ" means "acquiring" or "obtaining." It signifies the active pursuit of noble qualities and virtues. As Muslims, we are encouraged to strive for moral excellence and to cultivate noble traits such as patience, kindness, generosity, and honesty. This Hadith reminds us of the importance of actively seeking these virtues and working towards their acquisition.

Furthermore, the phrase (al-makarim) "المَكارِمِ" refers to "noble traits" or "excellent qualities." These are the qualities that elevate an individual's character and bring them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The pursuit of these noble traits is not only beneficial for an individual's personal growth but also for the betterment of society as a whole.

The Hadith then advises us to (tahammaloo a'ba'a al-magharim) "تَحَمَّلُوا أعْباءَ المَغارِمِ", which can be translated as

bear the burden of [others'] liabilities.

This phrase highlights the importance of compassion, empathy, and selflessness. It encourages us to support and help others in their times of need, even if it means taking on their burdens and difficulties.

By shouldering the burdens of others and assisting them in their struggles, we not only alleviate their hardships but also strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and unity within the Muslim community. This act of selflessness is highly regarded in Islam and is exemplified by the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his unwavering support and assistance to those in need.

The Hadith concludes with the statement, (tuhrizoo qasabat al-maghaneem) "تُحْرِزُوا قَصَباتِ المَغانِمِ", which can be translated as

you will achieve the greatest gains.

This phrase emphasizes the immense rewards and benefits that come from striving to acquire noble traits and helping others. It reminds us that the true gains in this world and the Hereafter lie in the cultivation of virtuous qualities and the selfless service to others.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of righteous deeds and mutual advice towards truth and patience. It aligns with the teachings of the Hadith, as it encourages the acquisition of noble traits and the support of others in their pursuit of righteousness.

Additionally, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the importance of unity and brotherhood among believers. It encourages us to support and reconcile with one another, just as the Hadith advises us to bear the burdens of others. By doing so, we not only strengthen our relationships but also earn the mercy and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to work diligently towards acquiring noble traits and virtues. It emphasizes the importance of self-improvement and the active pursuit of moral excellence. Furthermore, it encourages us to bear the burdens of others and support them in their times of need, fostering unity and compassion within the Muslim community. By following the teachings of this Hadith, we can achieve the greatest gains in this world and the Hereafter, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises immense rewards for those who strive for righteousness and selflessness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to embody these teachings and attain the highest levels of moral excellence.
