Hadith #4557

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كُلُّ امْرِء عَلى ما قَدَّمَ قادِمٌ وبِما عَمِلَ مَجْزِيٌّ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the concept of individual accountability and recompense for one's actions. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (amr) "امْرِء" refers to every individual, regardless of their gender or status. It encompasses all human beings, emphasizing the universality of this principle. The term (qaddama) "قَدَّمَ" means to send forward or to precede. It implies that every person is moving towards a destination or outcome based on their previous actions. The word (qadim) "قادِمٌ" signifies the approach or arrival of that outcome. It highlights the inevitability of facing the consequences of our deeds.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the concept of individual responsibility and accountability. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them will be gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

Conversely, if someone chooses the path of wrongdoing, they will face the consequences of their actions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),

And whoever earns evil, he earns it only against himself.

This verse emphasizes that the negative consequences of our actions will ultimately affect us alone.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for righteousness and to be mindful of their actions.
