Verily, he who gives to the one who deprives him, establishes ties with the one who cuts him off and forgives the one who oppresses him, will find in Allah, the Glorified, a Supporter and a Helper.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forgiveness And Pardon)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad () and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtues of generosity, forgiveness, and maintaining ties of kinship, even in the face of adversity. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that those who possess these qualities will find support and assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (gives) "أعْطَى" refers to the act of giving or bestowing something upon someone. It signifies generosity and selflessness. The word (deprives him) "حَرَمَهُ" refers to someone who has deprived or denied the giver of something. This could be in the form of material possessions, rights, or even emotional support.

The phrase (establishes ties with the one who cuts him off) "وَوَصَلَ مَنْ قَطَعَهُ" emphasizes the importance of maintaining relationships and reconciling with those who have severed ties. It encourages us to reach out to those who have distanced themselves from us, in order to foster unity and harmony within the community.

Furthermore, the phrase (forgives the one who oppresses him) "وَعَفَى عَمَّنْ ظَلَمَهُ" highlights the virtue of forgiveness. It urges us to forgive those who have wronged us, even when it may be difficult to do so. By forgiving others, we not only free ourselves from the burden of resentment and anger but also demonstrate the noble qualities of patience and compassion.

The Hadith concludes by stating that those who possess these qualities will find in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) a Supporter and a Helper. This means that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will assist and protect those who exhibit generosity, forgiveness, and the maintenance of family ties. This support can manifest in various ways, such as providing guidance, easing difficulties, and granting success in both this world and the hereafter.

To further understand the significance of these virtues, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:195)

And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction; but do good; for Allah loves those who do good

This verse emphasizes the importance of giving and being generous, as it is an act that pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Additionally, in Surah Al-Rad, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (3:134)

And those who restrain anger and pardon people - and Allah loves the doers of good

This verse highlights the virtue of forgiveness and the importance of controlling one's anger. By forgiving others, we emulate the qualities that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves and thus, we can hope for His support and assistance.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the virtues of generosity, forgiveness, and maintaining ties of kinship. By embodying these qualities, we not only please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also find His support and assistance. It is through these noble actions that we can create a harmonious and compassionate society, reflecting the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice these virtues and seek His support in all our endeavors.
