(Ghurar al-Hikam: The God-Wary And Godfearing People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The kings of Paradise are the God-wary and the sincere.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.
Firstly, the term "God-wary" is translated from the Arabic word (al-atqiya) "الأتْقِياءُ". It refers to those individuals who possess a deep sense of consciousness and fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They are vigilant in avoiding anything that displeases Allah and strive to fulfill their obligations and refrain from prohibitions. Their actions are driven by a sincere desire to please their Creator.
The second term is "the sincere," which is translated from the Arabic word (al-mukhlisoon) "المُخْلِصُونَ". It refers to those who are sincere and genuine in their faith and actions. They perform their deeds solely for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure and not desiring any worldly recognition or reward. Their intentions are pure, untainted by any ulterior motives.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:94),
Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing righteous deeds with sincere intentions. It highlights that those who are sincere in their faith and actions will be rewarded with a good life in this world and an eternal reward in the Hereafter. Thus, the concept of sincerity and God-consciousness is firmly established in the Quran.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'arij (70:22-25), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the righteous individuals who will be granted entry into Paradise. He says,
Those who fulfill their trusts and their promises and who are upright in their testimonies and who are constant in their prayers. And those within whose wealth is a known right for the petitioner and the deprived. And those who believe in the Day of Recompense.
These verses highlight the characteristics of the God-wary and the sincere. They are trustworthy, fulfill their promises, bear witness truthfully, and are steadfast in their prayers. They also recognize the rights of others and fulfill them, demonstrating their sincerity and devotion to Allah.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The "kings of Paradise" are not those who possess worldly power or material wealth, but rather those who possess the qualities of God-consciousness and sincerity. They are the true leaders in the sight of Allah, for their actions are driven by a genuine desire to please Him.
The God-wary and the sincere individuals are motivated by their love for Allah and their fear of His displeasure. They strive to fulfill their obligations and refrain from sins, even when no one is watching. Their sincerity is reflected in their actions, as they seek no recognition or reward from anyone other than Allah. They are content with the pleasure of their Lord and the promise of Paradise.
The consequences of embodying the qualities mentioned in this Hadith are profound. By being God-wary and sincere, Muslims can attain the highest ranks in Paradise and be among the honored dwellers of the Gardens of Bliss. Their sincerity and devotion will be rewarded with eternal happiness and closeness to Allah.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating sincerity in our faith and actions. We should strive to be conscious of Allah in all aspects of our lives, seeking His pleasure above all else. By doing so, we can become the true kings and queens of Paradise, attaining the ultimate success in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be among the God-wary and the sincere, and may He bless us with the highest ranks in Paradise. Ameen.
