Hadith #1329

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

يَنْبَغي لِلْمُؤْمِنِ أنْ يَلْزَمَ الطَّاعَةَ، ويَلْتَحِفَ الوَرَعَ والقَناعَةَ

which translates to,

It behoves a believer to remain obedient and to cover himself with piety and contentment.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (ta'ah) "طَاعَةَ" refers to obedience, compliance, and submission to the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses following the teachings of Islam, performing obligatory acts of worship, and refraining from prohibited actions. The word (wara'a) "وَرَعَ" signifies piety, righteousness, and the fear of Allah. It implies being conscious of Allah's presence at all times and striving to avoid anything that displeases Him. The word (qana'ah) "قَنَاعَةَ" denotes contentment, satisfaction, and being pleased with what Allah has decreed for us. It involves being grateful for the blessings we have and not constantly desiring more.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 4:59)

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result

This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, as well as those in positions of authority. It highlights the need for unity and resolving disagreements through the guidance of Allah and His Messenger.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs the believers, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers

This verse highlights the importance of piety and avoiding ridicule, insults, and offensive behavior towards others. It encourages believers to treat each other with respect and kindness, recognizing that superiority lies in righteousness and obedience to Allah.

Reflecting upon the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that as Muslims, it is our duty to remain obedient to Allah's commands and the teachings of His Messenger (ﷺ). This obedience encompasses not only the performance of obligatory acts of worship but also includes adhering to the principles of righteousness, piety, and moral conduct. It teaches us to find peace and satisfaction in what Allah has decreed for us, recognizing that true happiness lies in being content with His provisions.

By adhering to the teachings of this Hadith, Muslims can attain a state of inner peace and tranquility. They will be able to navigate the challenges of life with patience, gratitude, and a firm belief in Allah's wisdom and plan. Moreover, their obedience to Allah and their commitment to piety and contentment will inspire others and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.
