— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بَشِّرْ نَفْسَكَ إذا صَبَرْتَ بِالنُّجْحِ والظَّفَرِ

which translates to

Give glad tidings of success and victory to yourself when you are patient.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us analyze the key words in this Hadith. The word (bashshir) "بَشِّرْ" means to give glad tidings or to bring good news. (nafsaka) "نَفْسَكَ" refers to oneself, indicating that the glad tidings of success and victory should be internalized and embraced personally. (sabarta) "صَبَرْتَ" means to be patient, to endure hardships with perseverance and steadfastness. Finally, (an-nujhi wal-thafar) "النُّجْحِ والظَّفَرِ" translates to success and victory.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of patience during times of trial and tribulation, and it promises glad tidings for those who remain steadfast.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the connection between patience and strength, indicating that patience is a source of inner strength and resilience.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, reminds us in this Hadith that true success and victory come to those who remain patient in the face of challenges. Patience is not merely passive acceptance of difficulties, but rather an active virtue that enables us to navigate through hardships with determination and perseverance.

When we embody patience, we develop the ability to maintain our composure and remain steadfast in the face of adversity. This quality allows us to overcome obstacles, learn from our experiences, and grow stronger in our faith and character. It is through patience that we can attain success in this world and the hereafter.

For example, when Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) was thrown into the well by his brothers and later faced imprisonment, he remained patient and steadfast in his faith. As a result, he was eventually elevated to a position of power and authority, achieving success and victory over his circumstances.

Similarly, the story of Prophet Job (Ayub) teaches us the importance of patience. Despite enduring severe afflictions, he remained patient and steadfast in his faith, ultimately being rewarded with a double portion of blessings and a complete restoration of his health.

In light of these examples and the teachings of the Quran, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to give glad tidings to ourselves when we exhibit patience. This means recognizing that our patience during difficult times is not in vain, but rather a means of attaining success and victory.

When we remain patient, we develop resilience, inner strength, and a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We learn to trust in His divine plan and rely on His guidance, knowing that He is with the patient. This mindset enables us to navigate through challenges with grace and gratitude, knowing that every trial is an opportunity for growth and spiritual elevation.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of patience in attaining success and victory. By remaining patient in the face of trials, we develop resilience, inner strength, and a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Just as the Quran emphasizes the rewards for the patient, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to give glad tidings to ourselves when we exhibit this virtuous quality. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody patience and attain success in this life and the hereafter.
