رَحِمَ اللّهُ امْرَءاً اِتَّعَظَ وازْدَجَرَ، وانْتَفَعَ بِالعِبَرِ۔
May Allah have mercy on the person who accepts admonition, is deterred [from sin] and benefits from the lessons [he has] learnt.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Admonition)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of accepting admonition, being deterred from sin, and benefiting from the lessons learned. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.
First, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (amra'un) "امْرَءٌ" refers to a person, indicating that this mercy from Allah is not limited to a specific group or gender. The word (itta'aza) "اِتَّعَظَ" means to accept admonition or advice, implying that the person is open to guidance and willing to learn from their mistakes. The word (azdajara) "ازْدَجَرَ" means to be deterred or prevented from committing sins, indicating that the person is conscious of their actions and strives to avoid wrongdoing. Lastly, the word (inta'afa) "انْتَفَعَ" means to benefit or gain from the lessons learned, highlighting the importance of applying the acquired knowledge in one's life.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the essence of this Hadith. Allah says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:176):
And had We willed, We could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.
This verse highlights the importance of accepting admonition and guidance, as those who deny the signs of Allah are likened to a dog that pants regardless of the circumstances. Muslims should reflect upon the stories and lessons in the Quran to gain wisdom and understanding.
Another verse that supports this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Muminun (23:68):
But they denied him, so We saved him and those who were with him in the ship. And We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.
This verse emphasizes the consequences of rejecting admonition and guidance. Those who deny the signs of Allah are ultimately doomed, while those who accept and follow the guidance are saved. Muslims should be mindful of the consequences of their actions and strive to benefit from the lessons taught in the Quran.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be receptive to advice and admonition. By accepting admonition, we acknowledge our shortcomings and seek to rectify them. This leads to self-improvement and spiritual growth. Furthermore, being deterred from sin is a sign of taqwa (God-consciousness) and a manifestation of our commitment to righteousness. It demonstrates our awareness of Allah's presence and our desire to please Him. Additionally, benefiting from the lessons learned is a testament to the practical application of knowledge. It is not enough to simply acquire knowledge; we must actively implement it in our lives and strive to become better individuals.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of accepting admonition, being deterred from sin, and benefiting from the lessons learned. It encourages Muslims to be open-minded, conscious of their actions, and proactive in their pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement. By embodying these qualities, we can attain the mercy of Allah and strive towards becoming better Muslims. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us the ability to benefit from the lessons of the Quran.
