One who does not purify his soul from the lowliness of the coveted has actually abased himself and shall be even more abased and disgraced in the Hereafter.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Covetousness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of purifying one's soul from the lowliness of worldly desires and ambitions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns that those who fail to do so will not only abase themselves in this world but will also face even greater humiliation and disgrace in the Hereafter.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us examine the key words and concepts it contains. The word (his soul) "نَفْسَهُ" refers to the inner self, the essence of a person's being. (the lowliness of the coveted) "دَناءَةِ المَطامِعِ" refers to the base desires and ambitions that drive individuals to seek worldly possessions, power, and status. These desires, if not controlled and purified, can lead to moral degradation and spiritual downfall.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. For example, in Surah Al-Humazah (104:1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against those who backbite and slander others out of envy and greed, saying:
Woe to every scorner and mocker, who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
This verse highlights the delusion of those who believe that accumulating wealth and material possessions will bring them honor and immortality. In reality, such individuals are abasing themselves by prioritizing worldly gains over spiritual growth and moral values.
Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of worldly desires is found in Surah Al-Hashr (59:20), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.
This verse serves as a reminder that when individuals become consumed by their worldly desires and neglect their spiritual connection with Allah, they lose sight of their true selves. They become disconnected from their purpose and identity, leading to a state of self-abasement and disgrace.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful call to Muslims to reflect upon their intentions and motivations. It urges us to purify our souls from the lowliness of worldly desires and to prioritize our spiritual growth and moral values over material gains.
By doing so, we can elevate ourselves in this world and attain honor and dignity in the Hereafter. We should strive to seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and focus on actions that bring us closer to Him, such as acts of worship, charity, and kindness towards others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to purify their souls from the lowliness of worldly desires. It warns against the consequences of prioritizing material gains over spiritual growth and moral values. By heeding this advice, we can strive for a higher spiritual state and attain honor and dignity in both this world and the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in purifying our souls.
