Verily I do not urge you to any obedience but that I practice it before you, and I do not forbid you from any disobedience except that I desist from it before you.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he emphasizes his commitment to leading by example and his unwavering dedication to obedience and avoidance of disobedience. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The first important word in this Hadith is (ta'ah) "طاعَة", which means obedience. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that he does not urge the Muslims to obey any command unless he himself practices it before them. This highlights his exceptional leadership qualities and his commitment to leading by example. The Imam's actions align with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad () and the righteous leaders.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:21):

Certainly, you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.

This verse emphasizes the significance of following the example of the Prophet () in all aspects of life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) understood this principle and implemented it in his own leadership.

The second important word in this Hadith is (ma'siyah) "مَعْصِيَة", which means disobedience. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that he does not forbid the Muslims from any act of disobedience unless he himself abstains from it before them. This demonstrates his commitment to avoiding any actions that are contrary to the teachings of Islam. The Imam's actions align with the Quranic teachings that emphasize the importance of staying away from sinful acts.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, in Surah Al-Imran (3:135):

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness and refraining from persisting in sinful acts. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified this principle by avoiding disobedience himself before advising others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound statement in this Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to strive for excellence in their obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to avoid disobedience. By practicing what we preach and leading by example, we can inspire others to follow the path of righteousness. This Hadith also highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-accountability. We must constantly evaluate our own actions and strive to align them with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, which he acquired through his close association with the Prophet Muhammad (). His words in this Hadith reflect his deep understanding of the Quranic teachings and his commitment to upholding them in his own life. As Muslims, we should strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and emulate his dedication to obedience and avoidance of disobedience.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice what we preach and to lead by example in all aspects of our lives. May He guide us to obedience and protect us from disobedience. Ameen.
