مَنْ أحْسَنَ إلَى الرَّعِيَّةِ، نَشَرَ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ جَناحَ رَحْمَتِهِ وأدْخَلَهُ في مَغْفِرَتِهِ۔
Whoever does good to the people, Allah covers him with His mercy and places him in His pardon.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أحْسَنَ إلَى الرَّعِيَّةِ، نَشَرَ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ جَناحَ رَحْمَتِهِ وأدْخَلَهُ في مَغْفِرَتِهِ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of treating people with kindness and goodness. The word (ahsan) "أحْسَنَ" means to do good or to excel in goodness, while (ar-ra'iyyah) "الرَّعِيَّةِ" refers to the people or the community.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good treatment towards others. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)
And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.
This verse highlights the significance of not only speaking good words but also performing acts of worship and charity. It reminds us that our actions towards others should be rooted in kindness and compassion.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah states, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.
This verse teaches us to avoid mocking or belittling others, as we do not know their true worth in the sight of Allah. It encourages us to treat everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or status.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) complements these Quranic teachings by highlighting the divine consequences of treating people with goodness. It states that when someone does good to the people, Allah covers them with His mercy and includes them in His pardon. This means that Allah showers His blessings and forgiveness upon those who consistently display kindness and compassion towards others.
The motivation behind this Hadith is to encourage Muslims to cultivate a culture of benevolence and empathy within their communities. By doing good to others, we not only fulfill our obligations as Muslims but also contribute to the well-being and harmony of society. Our actions have a ripple effect, influencing those around us and inspiring them to follow the path of goodness.
The consequences of practicing this Hadith are manifold. Firstly, when we treat others with kindness, we create an atmosphere of love and unity within our communities. This fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims. Secondly, our good deeds towards others serve as a means of purification for our own souls. They elevate our spiritual status and bring us closer to Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our actions towards others are a reflection of our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,
The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of selflessness and altruism in Islam. When we prioritize the well-being of others and strive to make a positive impact in their lives, we embody the essence of true faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to treat others with kindness and goodness. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of good treatment towards others. By doing good to the people, we not only earn Allah's mercy and forgiveness but also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to embody the teachings of this Hadith in our daily lives and become beacons of compassion and love for all. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness.
