— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

All action is [as worthless] as scattered dust except that which is done with sincerity.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (amal) "عَمَلُ" in Arabic refers to any action or deed performed by an individual. It encompasses both physical acts and inner intentions. The word (haba) "هَبَاءٌ" means scattered dust or worthless particles. Thus, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the inherent insignificance and futility of all actions except those performed with sincerity.

This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of sincerity in worship and righteous deeds. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:84),

So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.

This verse underscores the necessity of sincerity in our actions, as associating partners with Allah nullifies the value of our deeds.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], 'We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.' Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

This verse highlights the importance of sincerity in worship, as those who seek intermediaries to bring them closer to Allah are misguided. True worship should be directed solely towards Allah, without any ulterior motives or associations.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the intentions behind their actions. It urges us to assess whether our deeds are driven by a genuine desire to please Allah or if they are tainted by personal gain, recognition, or worldly motives.

For example, if a person performs acts of charity solely to gain praise and admiration from others, their actions lose their value in the eyes of Allah. However, if the same person engages in acts of charity sincerely seeking the pleasure of Allah and the well-being of others, their actions become meaningful and righteous.

The consequences of insincere actions are highlighted in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:1-2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, 'We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.' And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars. They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

This verse exposes the hypocrisy of those who claim to believe but their actions are devoid of sincerity. Their insincere actions not only deceive others but also lead them astray from the path of Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of purifying our intentions and striving for sincerity in all our actions. We should constantly evaluate our motives and seek to align them with the pleasure of Allah. By doing so, we can transform our seemingly mundane actions into acts of worship that hold immense value in the sight of Allah.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to purify our intentions and perform all our actions with sincerity. May He accept our efforts and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
