Keep away from that for which there is little denial, even if the excuses from you are many, for it is not such that everyone who speaks ill [of you] can be excused by you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Apologizing And Offering Excuses)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us to be cautious and mindful of the consequences of our actions and words. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meaning in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (keep away from) "إيّاكَ" and (denial) "إنْكارُهُ". Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us to stay away from actions or behaviors that may lead to denial or criticism from others. He emphasizes that even if we have numerous excuses for our actions, it does not mean that everyone who speaks ill of us can be excused.
To understand the wisdom behind this advice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11) that we should not ridicule or mock others, as this may lead them to develop negative opinions about us. Allah says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12) that we should avoid suspicion and backbiting, as these actions can lead to division and harm within the Muslim community. Allah says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice aligns with these Quranic teachings. He urges us to be cautious of our actions and words, as they can have a profound impact on how others perceive us. Even if we have valid excuses for our behavior, it does not mean that everyone will understand or accept them. Therefore, it is essential to be mindful of our actions and strive to maintain a good reputation among our fellow Muslims.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his wisdom and knowledge, and his words in this Hadith reflect his deep understanding of human nature and the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships within the Muslim community. By following his advice, we can strive to create an atmosphere of unity, respect, and understanding among Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for us to be cautious of our actions and words. We should strive to avoid behaviors that may lead to denial or criticism from others, even if we have valid excuses. By aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran and the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can foster unity and harmony within the Muslim community and earn the respect and goodwill of our fellow believers. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow the path of righteousness and grant us the wisdom to navigate our interactions with others.
