(Ghurar al-Hikam: The One Who Surrenders)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كُلُّ مُسْتَسْلِم مُوَقًّي۔" which translates to

Everyone who surrenders [to Allah] is protected.

This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of surrendering oneself completely to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith for a better understanding. The word (mustaslim) "مُسْتَسْلِم" refers to someone who submits or surrenders themselves to Allah. It signifies a complete and sincere submission, where one acknowledges the authority and sovereignty of Allah in all aspects of their life. The word (muwaqqi) "مُوَقًّي۔" means protected or safeguarded. It implies that those who surrender to Allah will be granted divine protection and security.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:208),

O you who have believed, enter into peace completely and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of entering into peace completely, which aligns with the concept of surrendering to Allah. By surrendering ourselves to Allah, we distance ourselves from the influence of Satan and his temptations.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, which is an integral aspect of surrendering to Allah. By submitting to His commands and following the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (), we find strength and protection in our faith.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true protection lies in surrendering ourselves completely to Allah. When we submit to His will, we are shielded from the harms and trials of this world. This surrender is not merely a verbal declaration, but a sincere and unwavering commitment to live our lives in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

Surrendering to Allah brings numerous benefits and blessings. It grants us inner peace, as we trust in His divine plan and wisdom. It also protects us from the negative influences of the world, as we prioritize pleasing Allah over seeking validation from others. Moreover, surrendering to Allah strengthens our relationship with Him, as we acknowledge His sovereignty and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to strive for complete surrender to Allah. It encourages us to reflect on our level of submission and to continuously work towards deepening our connection with Him. By surrendering ourselves to Allah, we find solace, protection, and guidance in His infinite mercy and wisdom. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to surrender ourselves completely to Him and to be among those who are protected.
