Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "التَّبْذيرُ قَرينٌ مُفْلِسٌ۔" This Hadith can be translated as,

Wastefulness is a penniless companion.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (tabdheer) "التَّبْذيرُ" refers to wastefulness or extravagance. It is an act of spending or using resources excessively and without necessity. This includes squandering wealth, time, or any other valuable resources. The word (qareen) "قَرينٌ" means a companion or a close associate. And (mufliṣ) "مُفْلِسٌ" refers to someone who is bankrupt or destitute.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of moderation and avoiding wastefulness in several verses. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:27), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against extravagance, saying,

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences of wastefulness by stating that it is a penniless companion. This amazing Hadith signifies that indulging in extravagance and squandering resources will ultimately lead to poverty and destitution, both in this world and in the Hereafter.

When one engages in wastefulness, they neglect the principles of moderation and gratitude that Islam teaches. They fail to recognize the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and disregard the responsibility of utilizing resources wisely. Wastefulness not only depletes one's wealth but also hinders personal growth and development.

Moreover, wastefulness can have detrimental effects on society as a whole. It perpetuates a culture of excess and materialism, leading to economic disparities and social inequalities. It diverts resources away from those in need and contributes to the widening gap between the affluent and the impoverished.

To avoid wastefulness, Muslims are encouraged to adopt a balanced and mindful approach towards their resources. This means being grateful for the blessings bestowed upon them and using them in a manner that aligns with the teachings of Islam. It involves practicing moderation in spending, being conscious of the needs of others, and avoiding extravagance.

By adhering to the principles of moderation and avoiding wastefulness, Muslims can cultivate a sense of contentment and gratitude. They can fulfill their obligations towards their families, communities, and the less fortunate, while also safeguarding their own financial stability.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of wastefulness. It emphasizes the importance of moderation and gratitude in utilizing resources. By avoiding extravagance and practicing mindful spending, Muslims can not only protect themselves from financial hardship but also contribute to a more equitable and just society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be responsible stewards of His blessings and protect us from the pitfalls of wastefulness.
