مَنْ عاقَبَ مُعْتَذِراً عَظُمَتْ إساءَتُهُ۔
Whoever punishes the one who is apologetic has committed a grave injustice.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Requital And Reward)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Whoever punishes the one who is apologetic has committed a grave injustice.
This enlightening saying highlights the importance of forgiveness and mercy in Islam. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (punishes) "عاقَبَ", which refers to inflicting harm or retribution upon someone. The word (apologetic) "مُعْتَذِراً" signifies a person who expresses remorse, seeks forgiveness, and acknowledges their mistake. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that punishing such an individual is an act of grave injustice.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the virtues of forgiveness, mercy, and compassion. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nur (24:22),
And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse encourages Muslims to forgive others and overlook their faults, just as they hope for Allah's forgiveness.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:134), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of restraining anger and pardoning others, as it is an act that is beloved to Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that punishing someone who is genuinely apologetic goes against the principles of justice and mercy. It is important to differentiate between those who show remorse and seek forgiveness, and those who persist in their wrongdoing without any regret.
By punishing someone who is sincerely apologetic, we not only perpetuate a cycle of harm and resentment but also deny them the opportunity for redemption and growth. Instead, Islam encourages us to forgive and show mercy, allowing for the possibility of reform and reconciliation.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his teachings continue to guide Muslims today. His emphasis on forgiveness and mercy aligns with the broader teachings of Islam, as exemplified by the Quranic verses mentioned above.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of forgiveness and mercy in Islam. Punishing someone who is genuinely apologetic goes against the principles of justice and denies them the opportunity for redemption. Instead, we should strive to emulate the qualities of forgiveness and mercy, as taught by Allah in the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the teachings of Islam and grant us the ability to forgive and show mercy to others.
