(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forgiveness And Pardon)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Hastening in forgiving the sins [of others] is from the lofty morals of the honourable ones.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and highlights it as a noble characteristic of virtuous individuals.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (mu'ajalah) "مُعاجَلَةُ" means "hastening" or "quickly responding." It signifies the act of forgiving someone promptly, without delay. The term (dhunub) "الذُّنُوبِ" refers to sins or transgressions. (bil-ghufran) "بِالغُفْرانِ" means "with forgiveness." It implies pardoning or absolving someone of their wrongdoings.
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of forgiveness and encourages Muslims to adopt this noble quality. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah and not persisting in sinful behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:22), Allah states,
And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the need for forgiveness and pardoning others, as it is a means to attain Allah's forgiveness and mercy.
