إنَّ اللّهَ سُبْحانَهُ عِنْدَ إضْمارِ كُلِّ مُضْمِر، وقَوْلِ كُلِّ قائِل، وعَمَلِ كُلِّ عامِل۔
Verily Allah, the Glorified, knows the hidden intention of every concealer, the speech of every speaker and the action of every doer.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Intention)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) possesses complete knowledge and awareness of everything that is hidden from human perception. Allah is fully aware of the intentions that people conceal within themselves, the words they speak, and the actions they perform. This Hadith emphasizes the all-encompassing knowledge and wisdom of Allah, who is aware of every detail of our lives.
To further understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (idmār) "إضْمارِ" refers to the act of concealing or hiding something. It signifies the intentions that individuals keep hidden within themselves, which are not apparent to others. The term (muḍmir) "مُضْمِر" refers to the one who conceals or hides their true intentions.
The Hadith also mentions the word (qā'il) "قائِل", which refers to the one who speaks or utters words. This encompasses both the spoken words and the thoughts that are expressed through speech. Lastly, the term (ʿāmil) "عَامِل" refers to the one who performs actions or engages in deeds.
The exegesis of this Hadith can be further illuminated by referring to the Quranic verses that support its message. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Mulk (67:13),
And whether you conceal your speech or reveal it, indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
This verse emphasizes that Allah is fully aware of what is concealed within our hearts and minds, whether it is our intentions or the words we choose to express.
Another verse that complements the meaning of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:235), where Allah says,
There is no blame upon you for that to which you [indirectly] allude concerning a proposal to women or for what you conceal within yourselves. Allah knows that you will have them in mind.
This verse highlights that even the hidden intentions and desires that are not explicitly expressed are known to Allah.
The enlightening message of this Hadith is that Allah's knowledge is not limited to what is apparent to us. He has complete knowledge of our innermost thoughts, intentions, and actions. This knowledge serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their intentions and actions, as they are known to Allah. It encourages us to strive for sincerity and righteousness in all aspects of our lives, knowing that Allah is fully aware of our true selves.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that our actions and words are not hidden from Allah. This knowledge should motivate us to purify our intentions and strive for sincerity in all that we do. It reminds us to be cautious of our thoughts and to align them with the teachings of Islam. We should strive to be individuals whose intentions, words, and actions are in harmony with the guidance of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of Allah's all-encompassing knowledge. It highlights the importance of sincerity and righteousness in our intentions, words, and actions. May Allah guide us to be individuals who are conscious of His presence and strive to please Him in all aspects of our lives.
