(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Judicious)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The judicious person is one who gives thanks for blessings that come to him and is patient and thinks no more of it when the blessings turn away or turn back from him.

This Hadith highlights the qualities of a wise and discerning individual who possesses the ability to appreciate and be content with the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (hazim) "حازِمُ" refers to a judicious or discerning person who possesses wisdom and understanding. This person has the ability to make sound judgments and decisions. The word (shakara) "شَكَرَ" means to give thanks or show gratitude. It signifies acknowledging and appreciating the blessings that come one's way. The word (ni'mah) "نِّعْمَةَ" refers to blessings or favors bestowed upon an individual by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and highlights the promise of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to increase His blessings upon those who are grateful. It is a reminder that gratitude is not only a virtue but also a means to attain further blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Additionally, in Surah Ibrahim (14:34), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And He gave you of all that you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.

This verse highlights the abundant blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation, and it serves as a reminder for us to be grateful for these blessings.

Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom contained within the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The judicious person, as described in the Hadith, is one who not only expresses gratitude for the blessings received but also remains patient and content when those blessings are taken away or diminished. This quality demonstrates a deep understanding of the transient nature of worldly possessions and the importance of relying solely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

By being grateful for the blessings that come our way, we acknowledge that they are not a result of our own efforts alone, but rather a manifestation of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) mercy and favor upon us. Gratitude fosters a sense of humility and recognition of our dependence on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a means of drawing closer to Him and seeking His pleasure.

Furthermore, the quality of patience mentioned in the Hadith is crucial in maintaining a balanced perspective. It reminds us that blessings are not permanent, and they may be withdrawn or altered at any moment. Patience allows us to navigate the ebb and flow of life's circumstances with grace and composure. It enables us to accept the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and trust in His divine wisdom, even when faced with adversity or loss.

The Hadith also emphasizes the importance of not dwelling on past blessings that have been taken away or diminished. This serves as a reminder that our focus should always be on the present moment and the blessings that are currently within our reach. Dwelling on past blessings can lead to complacency and ingratitude, preventing us from fully appreciating and utilizing the blessings that are currently available to us.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides profound guidance on the qualities of a judicious person. By expressing gratitude for blessings, remaining patient in times of loss or adversity, and not dwelling on past blessings, we cultivate a mindset of contentment and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for these qualities in order to attain spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody these qualities in our lives.
